Submission Guidelines: The LAVA Awards occur annually and are open to all books that were published or republished in the last 10 years.
Yes, you may nominate your own book. Each category will be awarded a winner & multiple finalists. Individual press awards will also be awarded.
Registration automatically qualifies the book for the Lysander Spooner Award for best book, (regardless of category or class) & Charles Angrand Award for best artwork.
For each nomination, submit 3 copies of the book, nomination form, and $45 fee* (money order, silver or internet payment receipt - no checks) to

Be certain to specify award category and press designation. Registration will be confirmed via e-mail.
Judges may include authors, editors, agents, publishers, book producers, artists and LAVA members. All entrants will be notified of winners, after June 30th of the award year. After the contest, books will be donated to libraries, schools, and/or given as prizes at the Porcupine Freedom Festival!
Submissions must be RECEIVED by April 15th of the award year.
Note: Contest closed to previous LAVA Award winning book entries. At the low nomination fee, it is not feasible to provide judge’s critiques for each entry.
Note: No member will be allowed to judge their own submissions.

Award Categories: Books are judged by category and then nominated for the Spooner Award and other honors.

Individual Press Awards: In addition to the above category awards, books will be singled out for additional honors by press designation. Please check one of the following types on the nomination form.
| Press Type | Description |
| Micro Press | Titles from a publishing company that publishes less than 10 books per year (Self-Published titles shall be considered in this category). |
| Small Press | Titles from a publishing company that publishes more than 10 but less than 20 books per year. |
| Large Press | Titles from a publishing company that publishes more than 20 books per year. |
